Ginger's Tips & Tricks: Squalane Oil

One of my favorite products is Natural Skin Shop’s Squalane Moisturizer. Since I began using this product my face has never felt better. Now what exactly is Squalane you ask?

Squalane Oil is 100% plant based, and is derived from olives. (Bet you didn’t know the fruit you put in your martini, helps your skin). This moisturizer has almost the same molecular structure found in the natural oils in babies’ skin, which is why this hydrating product, Squalane, is nature’s perfect moisturizer.

What Squalane does:

-Helps retain moisture and boosts cell regeneration.
-It can rapidly and completely permeate the skin, and reduce signs of aging.
-Deactivates free radicals that are produced from UV exposure.

Benefits of Squalane:

-It is odorless and colorless. Won’t leave behind any smell, or any color stains.
-Ideal for sensitive or allergy prone skin due to it’s pure qualities.
-It has antibacterial qualities.
-Similar to products such as Vitamin A and Retinol.
-Squalane aids the healing process, soothing and calming irritated and inflamed skin. (Skin conditions such as eczema and allergy rashes.)
-Safe for children because it is chemical and preservative free (it is self preserving).

Tips on How To Use Squalane:

-Used to stimulate the healing process after microdermabrasion, laser, peels, and exfoliation.
- Facial Moisturizer.
- Body Moisturizer.
-To relieve chapped lips
-As cuticle oil
-As a moisturizing booster mixed in with your daily moisturizer during the winter months.
-People with dry skin can apply a couple drops to their skin to help their makeup glide on smoother.
-Can put it on dry hair for hydration and shine or mixed with your conditioner for added moisture.
-Can use it to moisturize dry skin and calluses on your feet.
-Mix with Hyaluronic Serum for a pure, natural moisturizer.

Overall Squalane is such a versatile hydrating prodct that aids a lot of different skin conditions. Try it today!

Mythbuster Monday: Does a Day at the Beach Help Your Skin?

The sun is high, the breeze is warm, and the temperature is hot. This is a perfect day to go to the beach!

We all know how much fun it is to spend a day at the beach, but have you ever wondered what good (or bad) affects it could have on your skin.

If you have ever had questions about salty ocean water and sunshine, know that there are positives and negatives associated with a day at the beach. To help you understand some of these affects here are some of the pro’s and con’s.

Pro’s

Salt water can be very helpful in the treatment of skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis. Certain research suggests that a swim in the ocean can help reduce inflammation and infection associated with atopic eczema. As for psoriasis and the itchy skin associated with it, ocean water can help with the removal of dead skin cells which is often the cause of the skin’s itchiness.

Acne sufferers are a third group who have also been said to find relief after a day at the beach. If you do suffer from acne, the sunshine produces sweat—which cleanses the pores—and provides a subtle drying affect for the skin.

Ocean water helps reduce inflammation and kills surface skin bacteria. If you have no skin issues, a day at the beach is still great. Ocean water is an inexpensive replactement a day at the spa. Plus, the sunshine is just a great mood enhancer.

Con’s

Too much salt or sun can lead to overly dry, dehydrated skin, and can cause premature wrinkles.
At the extreme end of the spectrum, skin disorders and cancer can result from overexposure to the sun.

To prevent many of the harmful effects from the sun while at the beach, a high SPF waterproof sunscreen is highly suggested. Try Neutrogena’s Fresh Cooling Body Mist Sunblock SPF 30. Unlike creams, the mist allows for an even coverage, and even a cooling sensation as applied to the body. Remember to reapply after a swim, or every couple of hours.
Overall, the combination of sunshine and ocean water (or just salt water) is a great idea to try several times a month when the weather is warm. So the next time you wonder if you should spend a day at the beach, go, just remember moderation and good judgment is key!

Mythbuster Monday: Does Your Hair Cause Acne?

Most girls have always wanted long, luxurious locks of hair, but did you know that hair(particularly long) can aid in causing acne.

When you have long hair, especially bangs, it leaves the oils on your face, clogging your pores. This is in addition to the oils that your face normally produces.

Some tips to avoid having your hair cause acne on your face:

1.Pull your hair off your face when you sleep.
-Keep your hair off your face during the day as much as possible.
-This prevents aggravation of the skin.

2.Don't use greasy hair products
-Pomades/gels/hair sprays can clog your pores when your brush    against your face
-Shield your face when applying sprays and gels.

3.Clean your hair frequently.
-Choose shampoo which contains natural ingredients.
-Make sure the shampoo doesn't contain sodium laureth sulfate.

Remember long hair does look good but not when it is all over your pimply face.Using these tips, will reduce oil, and keep your face fresher and cleaner.

Skin Care Tips & Tricks By Ginger

    Tip #1 USE COOL WATER!

Be sure to mind the temperature of the water you use on your skin, especially the face. Hot water breaks down proteins and connective tissue which give your skin a youthful appearance, strips away your protective oils and proteins making you more susceptible to damage, and promotes transdermal and intracellular water loss (responsible for dehydrated skin and accelerated aging in cells). Keep it cool, or at least tepid.

TIP# 2 DON'T PUT YOUR HAND IN THE JAR!

Funny, no one every shows you how to properly USE a cream but they will tell you all day long about why you should buy it. Here is what I have learned over the years: If your moisturizer is in a jar, use a Q-tip to dispense the product into your hand. This serves 2 purposes - what fits on the end of the Q-tips should be enough product to do the job is you are using a quality product AND it's more hygienic. Sticking your finger into a jar of cream will cause the product to become contaminated with oils, debris, skin cells and anything else that might be on your finger.

Trick #1 PROPERLY APPLYING FACE CREAM

Ok, so now it's in your hand.....the best application method is to spread the product evenly across your palms and fingers then gently lay your hands on your face letting the skin take away what it needs. Repeat the process until you have covered all areas.

Trick #2 NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF RUBBING

Rubbing your product onto your skin not only helps Father Time but forces the ingredients into the skin. "But what about the stimulating effects of rubbing?" Well, the slight suction action that happens when you lay your product laden hands on your face also stimulates circulation, but in a productive fashion. So remember, DON'T rub in your lotion.

    Enlarged Pores No More!

Enlarged pores are not attractive but how do you get rid of them? The first step, understand why your pores have become enlarged.  Dirt, oil and dead skin cells trapped inside your pores cause them to look enlarged. This means you need to find a way to get all that unwanted dirt, oil and dead skin out of your pores and then find the perfect way to keep it out.

An AHA/BHA peel performed every 2-3 weeks can go deep into the pores and remove impurities to minimize the appearance of your pores. Use a daily glycolic or salicylic exfoliator can help keep those pores clean between peels!

Keeping your skin super hydrated helps too. Once a pore is dilated, you can't shrink it back but you can diminish the appearance. A hyaluronic serum will boost the epidermal water content thus "plumping" the skin up and making them look smaller. Consistent dehydration will cause further dilation, making them bigger....hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Glycolic Acid Peels: Picking The Right Strength

If you are looking for more radiant, younger looking skin glycolic skin peels are for you. Glycolic skin peels produce great results but one must be careful to use the correct strength.  For those of you who are a bit nervous about using a chemical peel, either because you've never used them before or you're afraid your skin is too sensitive, this post should help.

20% Glycolic Acid Peel Kits are perfect for young sensitive skin and first time users. This kit comes with a medium grade chemical peel, daily use exfoliator and hyaluronic moisturizer.

Using a kit will help you heal faster and enhance the natural turnover process.  Ask anyone who has had a professional peel, your face can become very red and irritated making it difficult to go about your life without stares. Using a kit can help prevent this.  The daily exfoliator will help turn over skin cells and promote the effects of the peel while using the hyaluronic moisturizer helps soothe, nourish and moisturize post-peel.

Its important to remember that while glycoclic acid is a natural chemical its very potent and applying a peel can produce dramatic results.  Therefore, a first time user or someone with young sensitive skin should opt for the lightest peel kit.

If you are interested in learning more about glycolic acid peels visit www.naturalskinshop.com or contact one of our helpful skin experts on Facebook (Kim or Kristen) or call toll free 888.514.5126 Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm  EST.

SPF Moisturizers Are Important its Melanoma Awareness Month

Today is the first day of May, Melanoma Awareness Month. According to the Webster dictionary Melanoma is a highly malignant tumor that starts in melanocytes of normal skin or moles and metastasizes rapidly and widely. Simply stated, Melanoma is a cancer that starts with your skin and most often is the results of prolonged exposure to the sun.

All too often we forget our skin is our largest organ. That we need to treat it well, protect it and find the right products to both treat and protect. There are many fancy, over priced, skin care products in stores across the world. What do you look for and how do you know you're using the best products.

First and foremost you MUST use a daily moisturizer that contains a strong SPF.  Protecting your skin from the sun isn't just for those day's you spend on the beach. Using SPF should be part of your daily skin care regiment regardless of what time of year. You should also check your moisturizers label and make sure it contains both titanium dioxide and Octinoxate. Titanium dioxide and Octinoxate help to protect skin against the UVA and UVB rays of the sun, prevent sun damage and help prevent premature aging of skin.

We suggest you try Natural Skin Care Shop's Green Tea Anti-Aging SPF 30 + Moisturizer which contains a high SPF with active ingredients Octinoxate 7%, Titanium Dioxide 2%. By using the right moisturizer daily you can prevent melanoma, lines and long term skin damage.

If you are interested in learning more about day time moisturizers www.naturalskinshop.com or contact one of our helpful skin experts on Facebook (Kim or Kristen) or call toll free 888.514.5126 Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm  EST.

    Glycolic Acid Peels at Home

The average cost for an in office Glycolic Acid Peel is $125.  This can add up as, on average, you will need 6-8 peels before you start to see results. But there is good news, Glycolic Acid Peels can be done at home using the same products with the same strengths used by professionals but at a much reduced price.

When deciding to do an at home Glycolic Acid Peel you should do your research. If its your first time make sure to use a lower strength.  Natural Skin Shop has kits ranging from  20% light strength all the way up to the 70% maximum strength.

Using Glyolic Acid Peel Kits rather than just the medical grade chemical peel itself is also a wise choice. Kits have been put together to provide the best overall results and the quickest healing time. Applying a peel can produce dramatic results - shedding dead, damaged cells and replacing them with new, softer skin for a more even skin tone and youthful appearance. To perform a treatment that will fully enhance the natural turnover process, you must also treat the skin during the "downtime", otherwise known as the period between peels.

If you are interested in learning more about how a Glycolic Acid Peel can help improve your skin visit www.naturalskinshop.com or contact one of our helpful skin experts on Facebook (Kim or Kristen) or call toll free 888.514.5126 Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm  EST.

Skin Care Tips For Cancer Patients & Survivors

If you have, or are now going through cancer treatments you know what havoc it reeks on your skin.  I remember my skin literally peeling off when I tried to shower. In fact, at one point my mother took me to a spa as a treat. The plan was to get my hair cut and eye brows waxed. For some reason no one mentioned to the salon that I was undergoing radiation and chemo therapy. Because I looked like a cancer patient the esthetician asked me a very important questions, "do you have cancer and if so are you undergoing treatment?"

Well the answer was of course yes and that's when I realized what a huge disaster I had just avoided. If I had gone through with the eye brow waxing I would have lost all the skin along with any eyebrow hairs I had. Read more about this on my former post: Note To Self: Do NOT Wax Eyebrows When Getting Chemo.

So what should you be doing to take care of skin during and after cancer treatments?  Skin can become very dry after treatments and that means the focus should be on hydrating the largest organ in your body.  There are several ways to keep skin hydrated so as to avoid lines, wrinkles and that sickly yellow skin color.

    1) Drink plenty of water and eat raw fruits and vegetables high in anti oxidants

    2) Try 100% chemical and preservative free moisturizers like Dr. Beckers

    3) Avoid invasive or harsh facial services and replace them with light massages.

    4) Use products that are similar to your skins own natural oils. Squalane moisturizers are great as they the finest, most delicate moisturizers available in the world.

If you have more questions about what types of products you should be using the esthetician at NaturalSkinShop.com can help you. Just visit www.naturalskinshop.com and click on live chat button.

    SKIN CARE ORIENTATION

Kristina Holland-Natural Skin Shop’s skin savvy writer (& biggest fan!)

Every now and then, it may seem like you have missed the first day of skin care orientation. Should I pat or air dry? Is a toner absolutely necessary? Should I use hot or cold water to wash my face? These answers and more can make the difference between a complexion that glows and one that woes!

SKIN CARE RULES TO GLOW BY…
“Wash Your Troubles Away…With Lukewarm Water.”
Be sure to get a thorough cleanse with lukewarm water. Ice-cold water tightens pores thereby preventing your cleanser from penetrating deep into the pore-lining. This is particularly true for medicated cleansers, such as Peel Rx Alpha-Beta Cleanser, infused with tea tree oil and salicylic acid. On the opposite end, hot water can exasperate dry skin and acne conditions by weakening the lipid barrier. Extreme water temperatures in either direction can result in broken capillaries otherwise known as “telangiectasia”. Lukewarm water, neither too hot nor too cold, is a healthy choice for clear, beautiful skin! Follow a gentle cleansing with a splash of cool water for a refreshing, pore-tightening effect.
PS: Be careful not to over-cleanse and disturb the acid mantle!

“Tone Your Way to Extraordinarily Beautiful Skin.”
Toners are often disregarded as unnecessary, excessive and worthless. However, this common misunderstanding couldn’t be further from the truth! For most skin types, particularly those with special needs, they can be a skinsaver! Medicated toners, such as Peel Rx Alpha-Beta Toner, can dramatically improve acne conditions without imparting dehydration and irritation. In fact, toners prep the skin for moisture delivery and restore a healthy PH balance. Toners have really grown-up in the past few years. No longer the drying and irritating astringents of the past, toners successfully clear residual impurities, tighten pores and eradicate dead skin cells. Unfortunately, water systems fail to deliver pure, clean, unadulterated water. A toner ensures your skin isn’t left to the demise of skin-disturbing mineral deposits. On the same note, even splashing with water can disturb the skin’s delicate PH balance. Choose a PH-balanced toner that is appropriate for your skin type. Many contain emollients and antioxidants to further protect skin from the perils of UV radiation and harsh climates.

Visit naturalskinshop.com for more info about glycolic peels and glycolic acid peels, and don't forget to come back next week for Skin Care Orientation Part II (!)

“BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE”… With Natural Skin Shop dry skin is bound to go ‘way!

By Kristina Holland-Natural Skin Shop skin savvy writer (& biggest fan!)

    DON’T TAKE A WINTER “BREAK”…

Unless you’re living in the Southern Hemisphere…you (and your skin) know the winter season is here. This arid albeit invigorating time of year can make or break your complexion…. figuratively and literally! The dry climate can parch skin of essential moisture thereby weakening or fracturing the intracellular strength of the ceramide barrier. Averting moisture loss all year-round is essential for the consistent health and beauty of your skin. A cohesive daily skin care regimen consisting of gentle cleansing, abundant hydration and moderate exfoliation ensures your skin is in tip-top shape and prepared to handle the onset of frigid temperatures. Individuals with pre-existing conditions, such eczema or psoriasis, are particularly vulnerable to harsh climates and require added protection from the elements.

    SKIN FORECAST…‘CLEAR’ SKIES AHEAD

Sulfate-free and PH balanced cleansers, such as Lumirance Lotion Cleanser, are ideal for winter…fall, summer and spring! A gentle daily cleanser will thoroughly remove pore-clogging debris without the unnecessary side effect of dehydration. Paraben-free moisturizers with a healthy dose of hyaluronic acid, such as Hilton Becker MD 100% Chemical and Preservative Free Moisturizer, are particularly beneficial during the winter season. Hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the skin, restores strength and vitality to an impaired barrier. Due to an unhealthy combination of inadequate exfoliation and dermal dehydration, skin exposed to frosty weather often appears chapped, dull and flaky. Don’t let the winter season deter you from exfoliating on a regular basis! Skin Peels are an effective form of chemical exfoliation, which eradicate dead skin cells without disturbing the skin’s normal intracellular matrix. In fact, Glycolic Acid Peels enhance suppleness and elasticity by accelerating the cellular turnover rate thereby improving the skin’s capacity for sustaining hydration.

“Tis the Winter Season to be Jolly, Bright and Beautiful!”

    LESS IS MORE!

When it comes to skin…the household adage couldn’t be more akin to Natural Skin Shop!

Have you ever sneaked a peak to the backside of a mainstream beauty cream only to discover a lengthy list of peculiar ingredients, which sound the least bit “soothing” or “invigorating”? Never mind the English language, these ingredients defy the basic laws of chemistry! More often than not, commercial skin care products are loaded with cheap fillers and harmful additives. So…what exactly are you purchasing? Unfortunately, in most cases, the consumer is paying a superfluous amount for fancy advertising and extravagant packaging. The end result: A hefty bill and skin that has yet to reap the benefits…

    A SKIN CARE CONNOISSEUR
Make the most of your complexion by becoming an ingredient whiz! High-grade, safe and effective skin care ingredients ensure real results without the risk of irritation. Always check an ingredient label before purchasing a product to determine if it’s right for you…

BEWARE: “ THE SKIN CARE BANDITS”
    • Parabens: Toxic and harsh! Not all preservative are created equal!
    • Hydroquinone: A venomous threat to you and your skin!
    • Ethyl Alcohol: Drying to even the most overactive sebaceous gland! Helpful Hint: Some alcohols are beneficial and function as preservatives, emulsifiers, antiseptics & solvents. Case in point, Cetyl Alcohol is commonly used as a non-abrasive thickening agent.
    • Soybean Oil/Lanolin Oil (synthetic)/Cottonseed Oil/Coconut Oil: Pore-clogging and just plain irritating! Helpful Hint: Oil-free doesn’t guarantee a product won’t clog your pores. In fact, many oils, such as jojoba and squalane, encourage healthy skin function. To ‘clear’ the confusion, opt for products labeled “non-comedogenic” or “non-acnegenic”.
NATURAL SKIN SHOP GIVES YOU MORE…FOR LESS!
Natural Skin Shop’s professional grade Chemical Peels, such as the vastly popular Glycolic Acid Peel, renew skin like none other due to the simplistic, yet powerful concentration of premier ingredients. The Natural Skin Shop difference begins with first-class formulations and ends with a beautiful complexion!
