CARING FOR YOUR SKIN DURING SUMMER

In case you haven’t noticed… summer has arrived! You may be a little busy at work or finishing up the school year to notice, or you may have already planned trips for the whole season. Either way, you need to make sure you and your skin are ready for the change in weather and the hot summer sun. So, I’ve summed up your summer skin survival guide in three quick tips.

Tip #1: Keep those kissers kissable! Some of us neglect our lips, but they are almost always exposed. Stay away from shiny lip glosses. I know they make your lips look fuller, but they can really do more harm than good. A chapstick, or lip balm, or even lipstick with SPF 15 is ideal year-round.

Tip #2: Invest in some new shades. Sunglasses can really do more than add to your style. The right pair can actually protect your eyes from harmful effects of the sun. While UVA rays may be absorbed within the lens of the eye, UVB rays over the years has been suggested to cause cataracts. Be sure to find a pair, though, that are labeled “UV 400” or “100% UV protection.”

Tip #3: SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN! Apply it 20-30 minutes before you step out into the sun, even in places you think are protected by clothing. For daily protection, SPF 15 will do the job but if you happen to have sensitive skin and you burn readily, using SPF 30 would be your best bet.  Even if you don’t burn easily, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use sunscreen. You still want to make sure the UVA rays don’t damage your skin. Be sure to reapply every 2 hours. If you perspire from activity or are in water, I would suggest reapplying every 90 minutes, even if your sunscreen is waterproof.

Remember, taking care of your skin doesn’t have to get in the way of getting dolled up! Wearing make-up can help block UV light, but it cannot protect your face in a way to prevent skin damage. Just put on sunscreen first, or a moisturizer with SPF 15+, wait a bit for it to set in, then apply your makeup like usual.

Wherever the wind blows you, keeping these three tips in mind will let you enjoy your summer without having to worry about chapped lips, sensitive eyes or leathery skin! It’s that simple.

Hyperpigmentation Solutions

Hyperpigmentation is one of the biggest skin concerns but there are some great solutions to this common problem.

Natural Skin Shop has many peels to choose from, all of them help with hyperpigmentation.  However, the brightening peels (AHA Kojic) are great because they contain a combination of Alpha Hydroxy Glycolic, Lactic and Pyruvic Acids together with Kojic acid, Bearberry and Licorice extracts to inhibit skin discoloration and melanin production and slow the darkening of the cells.

There are also two very important accessory products to boost the results of these peels, Max Strength Alpha Arbutin Serum and Skin Lighten Activator. Both contain the hydroquinone alternative alpha arbutin, which will keep your new healthy skin light and bright following the peels.

SPF Moisturizers Are Important its Melanoma Awareness Month

Today is the first day of May, Melanoma Awareness Month. According to the Webster dictionary Melanoma is a highly malignant tumor that starts in melanocytes of normal skin or moles and metastasizes rapidly and widely. Simply stated, Melanoma is a cancer that starts with your skin and most often is the results of prolonged exposure to the sun.

All too often we forget our skin is our largest organ. That we need to treat it well, protect it and find the right products to both treat and protect. There are many fancy, over priced, skin care products in stores across the world. What do you look for and how do you know you're using the best products.

First and foremost you MUST use a daily moisturizer that contains a strong SPF.  Protecting your skin from the sun isn't just for those day's you spend on the beach. Using SPF should be part of your daily skin care regiment regardless of what time of year. You should also check your moisturizers label and make sure it contains both titanium dioxide and Octinoxate. Titanium dioxide and Octinoxate help to protect skin against the UVA and UVB rays of the sun, prevent sun damage and help prevent premature aging of skin.

We suggest you try Natural Skin Care Shop's Green Tea Anti-Aging SPF 30 + Moisturizer which contains a high SPF with active ingredients Octinoxate 7%, Titanium Dioxide 2%. By using the right moisturizer daily you can prevent melanoma, lines and long term skin damage.

Glycolic Acid Peels at Home

The average cost for an in office Glycolic Acid Peel is $125.  This can add up as, on average, you will need 6-8 peels before you start to see results. But there is good news, Glycolic Acid Peels can be done at home using the same products with the same strengths used by professionals but at a much reduced price.

When deciding to do an at home Glycolic Acid Peel you should do your research. If its your first time make sure to use a lower strength.  Natural Skin Shop has kits ranging from  20% light strength all the way up to the 70% maximum strength.

Using Glyolic Acid Peel Kits rather than just the medical grade chemical peel itself is also a wise choice. Kits have been put together to provide the best overall results and the quickest healing time. Applying a peel can produce dramatic results - shedding dead, damaged cells and replacing them with new, softer skin for a more even skin tone and youthful appearance. To perform a treatment that will fully enhance the natural turnover process, you must also treat the skin during the "downtime", otherwise known as the period between peels.

Skin Care Tips For Cancer Patients & Survivors

If you have, or are now going through cancer treatments you know what havoc it reeks on your skin.  I remember my skin literally peeling off when I tried to shower. In fact, at one point my mother took me to a spa as a treat. The plan was to get my hair cut and eye brows waxed. For some reason no one mentioned to the salon that I was undergoing radiation and chemo therapy. Because I looked like a cancer patient the esthetician asked me a very important questions, "do you have cancer and if so are you undergoing treatment?"

Well the answer was of course yes and that's when I realized what a huge disaster I had just avoided. If I had gone through with the eye brow waxing I would have lost all the skin along with any eyebrow hairs I had. Read more about this on my former post: Note To Self: Do NOT Wax Eyebrows When Getting Chemo.

So what should you be doing to take care of skin during and after cancer treatments?  Skin can become very dry after treatments and that means the focus should be on hydrating the largest organ in your body.  There are several ways to keep skin hydrated so as to avoid lines, wrinkles and that sickly yellow skin color.

1) Drink plenty of water and eat raw fruits and vegetables high in anti oxidants

2) Try 100% chemical and preservative free moisturizers like Dr. Beckers

3) Avoid invasive or harsh facial services and replace them with light massages.

4) Use products that are similar to your skins own natural oils. Squalane moisturizers are great as they the finest, most delicate moisturizers available in the world.

If you have more questions about what types of products you should be using the esthetician at NaturalSkinShop.com can help you. Just visit www.naturalskinshop.com and click on live chat button.

Prevent and Treat Dry Skin as the Weather Turns Colder

It's a sad fact that summer is over and cold, dry weather is on its way. Transitioning from summer to winter can take a toll on the skin and this stress can manifest itself in many ways, such as: dryness, irritation, itching, and flaking.

So how can you prevent dry skin? First of all, remember to drink a lot of water. Your skin loves water and the recommended 8 glasses can help your skin stay hydrated. You should also avoid long, hot showers, especially during winter and protect your hands with gloves when you go outside. If the central heating dries you out, a small humidifier can do the trick and help keep your skin moist.

For many women, dry skin is not just a seasonal problem. Dry skin has lazy sebaceous glands that need help to produce oils. Many believe that applying greasy, heavy creams will help to moisturize dry skin but this simply isn’t true. Heavy creams suffocate skin, leaving a dull, lifeless appearance. The content of the cream is much more important than the texture. Look for creams with high contents of hyaluronic acid (THE best moisturizing agent on the market), naturally derived plant oils (such as olive derived squalane oil), and minimal fragrance (a skin irritant). Restoring the hydro-lipid balance and water content of the skin is the ultimate goal for treating winter weary, dry skin.

To treat dry skin, you need to nourish, moisturize and protect it.
A designated skin care prescription for dehydrated skin type is:

  • Cleanse with gentle, pH balanced cleanser – such as Green Tea Cleanser.
Daily exfoliation to remove dead skin cell build up
Intense hydration with a hyaluronic acid based serum – like Mizu Hydrate Serum – Pure.
A pure and effective moisturizing cream – Green Tea Anti-oxidant Moisture Cream
