Scavenger Hunt Winners

Natural Skin Shop is excited to announce our Scavenger Hunt Grand Prize winner Amber Smith of $1000 gift certificate.

I would just like to say how much I enjoyed playing your scavenger hunt and how grateful I feel to have won the grand prize. My family experiences everything from psoriasis to sun damage to blemish problems so I'm thrilled to get some of your correction and treatment products so we can all have beautiful glowing skin again. I'm truly grateful for such a generous giveaway,” said Amber Smith.

Natural Skin Shop hosted a Scavenger Hunt for seven days. We provided clues and our participants hunted for the answer. There were numerous ways to aquire more entries such as Facebook status updates, Twitter, write about the contest in a blog post, and even one day “liking” our Facebook Fan Page.

I looked forward to playing every morning and learned a lot about skincare facts and myths while searching through the Natural Skin Shop Education Center section”, said Amber Smith.

In addition to the grand prize there were three runners up: Cory Dixon, Rachel Wilson, and Jane Toumpas, who each won $100 gift certificate to Natural Skin Shop.

Natural Skin Shop was so thrilled with the enthusiam from all our participants, we decided to give a one time 50% off coupons to everyone who participated in the Scavenger Hunt.

Self Tanning Tips & Tricks by Ginger

The world of self tanning has come along way in recent years. However, one fact remains - if you don't take the time to prep or maintain, everyone will know you fake bake.  Below are some tips and tricks to fool even those who know you best.

Trick #1: Shave Those Legs

When at all possible, shave your legs before applying.  This serves as a form of exfoliation and gets you the best application possible.  I personally use a body scrub prior to shaving for double action.  If you are going to use self tanner, you should have a body scrub or luffa in your shower.  The body scrub should be in a cleanser or non-oil base.

Tip #1: Buy The Good Stuff

Buy a good, reputable self tanner AND a daily moisturizer with a hint of self tanning ingredients.  There are plenty of excellent products on the market but you need to find the texture, color, smell, and application method you prefer.  I personally have LOVED the Clarins Delicious Self Tanning Cream since it was launched.  I love the smell, the way it makes my skin feel, the color - everything but the price, but quality cost more.

I have runner up I use when money is tight (meaning I splurged on something else!).  To make your glow last longer and keep the look even, apply a "hint of color" moisturizer in between your self tanner applications (every 3 days is a good schedule).  I picked up this trick recently when I bought some Moist Hemp Bronzing Moisturizer at Sally's ($8.50 for 18oz bottle - can't go wrong) and realized that my self tanner was lasting much longer than usual.  I really love the smell and feel of this for every day and am getting some added benefits on the side!

Tip #2: No Body Self Tanner on Your Face

I personally recommend not using a body self tanner on your face.  Pick one that is designed for that skin because the facial epidermis is a totally different beast than your body epidermis.  The best ones absorb quickly, leave little to no residue, and tend to have multiple shades to choose from.  My favorite has been discontinued (but will be relaunched in the fall, or so Clarins promises) so I have settled for second best which is Clarins Liquid Bronze Self Tanning (Face and Decollete).  Again, this is my personal choice and you need to find what works best for you.

Trick #2: Take Your Time

Finally, take your time when applying.  If you use one that has a tint built in and realize that you are blotchy, no worries.  It's usually just the tint that didn't spread evenly, not the self tanning ingredients (if you rubbed it in good).  To fix this and avoid washing the instant color off, wait 30 minutes to let the self tanner process and use the bronzing moisturizer to even out the disbursement of the tint.

HAPPY SUNLESS TANNING!

CARING FOR YOUR SKIN DURING SUMMER

In case you haven’t noticed… summer has arrived! You may be a little busy at work or finishing up the school year to notice, or you may have already planned trips for the whole season. Either way, you need to make sure you and your skin are ready for the change in weather and the hot summer sun. So, I’ve summed up your summer skin survival guide in three quick tips.

Tip #1: Keep those kissers kissable! Some of us neglect our lips, but they are almost always exposed. Stay away from shiny lip glosses. I know they make your lips look fuller, but they can really do more harm than good. A chapstick, or lip balm, or even lipstick with SPF 15 is ideal year-round.

Tip #2: Invest in some new shades. Sunglasses can really do more than add to your style. The right pair can actually protect your eyes from harmful effects of the sun. While UVA rays may be absorbed within the lens of the eye, UVB rays over the years has been suggested to cause cataracts. Be sure to find a pair, though, that are labeled “UV 400” or “100% UV protection.”

Tip #3: SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN! Apply it 20-30 minutes before you step out into the sun, even in places you think are protected by clothing. For daily protection, SPF 15 will do the job but if you happen to have sensitive skin and you burn readily, using SPF 30 would be your best bet.  Even if you don’t burn easily, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use sunscreen. You still want to make sure the UVA rays don’t damage your skin. Be sure to reapply every 2 hours. If you perspire from activity or are in water, I would suggest reapplying every 90 minutes, even if your sunscreen is waterproof.

Remember, taking care of your skin doesn’t have to get in the way of getting dolled up! Wearing make-up can help block UV light, but it cannot protect your face in a way to prevent skin damage. Just put on sunscreen first, or a moisturizer with SPF 15+, wait a bit for it to set in, then apply your makeup like usual.

Wherever the wind blows you, keeping these three tips in mind will let you enjoy your summer without having to worry about chapped lips, sensitive eyes or leathery skin! It’s that simple.

    Basic Skincare: Simple as Breakfast

When it comes to basic skin care there are three things to remember: Grapes, Raisins, and Corn Flakes. What do fruit and cereal have to do with skin you may ask, well let us go through it together shall we?

Think of your skin in layers. Three layers. The top layer being the crunchy cornflakes, the middle full of wrinkly raisins, and the bottom, most precious layer filled with moist, juicy grapes.

Now that you’ve got that scrumptious image in your mind, let’s shift our thinking from eating those cornflakes to exfoliating them away.

    Layers of Skin

The grapes, raisins, and cornflakes represent the cells in the layers of your skin. The skin cells in their original form are plump and juicy just like fresh picked grapes.

As time goes by those grape-like cells are exposed to the sun, wind, pollutants, stress and other unavoidable hazards and slowly begin to take the form of wrinkly, dry raisins. Sadly, some of those wrinkly raisin cells dry up completely to form that top layer of skin cells we will refer to as cornflakes. With this imagery in mind basic skin care couldn’t be more simple.

    Steps to Basic Skin Care

The first step is to exfoliate those dry cornflake cells away as they appear. This will be approximately 3 times a week with gentle daily cleanses in between. Once the flakies are gone, the wrinkly raisins are fully exposed with the plump grapes right underneath them.

The next goal is to plump up the wrinkly raisins with a good facial moisturizer and slow down the aging of the grapes by applying a skin protectant loaded with sunscreen. That’s it. That is the grape, raisin, and cornflake method to having soft, moist skin no matter what stage of life your in.

Everyone, young and old, have these different layers of skin and the trick to basic skin care is to just care for each layer. Scrub off the cornflakes, moisturize the raisins, and protect the grapes.

Tips & Tricks By Ginger: Puffy Eyes

Do strangers ever call you “the bag lady” and not because of the trendy shopping bags you carry in your hands, but instead referring to the bags that lug around under your eyes? Fear not. Puffy eyes are all-too-common, especially when everyone is always on the go. Check out these tips and tricks to minimize the look of puffy eyes.

Tip #1: Get Behind a Cause
The first step in treating your eyes is finding out what’s making them puffy. Many factors from genetics to allergies can be the culprit. If you wear contact lenses, you may find that simply switching them out for fresh frames will diminish those bags. Sleep deprivation, stress and alcohol use are also common causes of puffiness.
    Trick #1: Prevention
If lack of sleep is making your eyes bulge, then do your best to get at least the recommended eight hours of rest each night. Limiting your alcohol intake—especially on the weekends when the tendency to drink is increased—and exchanging your shot glass for a bottle of water will also greatly decrease your chances of waking up with puffy eyes. The stress factor can be prevented by merely doing things you love or that release endorphins. Regular exercise reduces both physical and emotional stress.

Tip #2: Exercise Those Baby Blues
Blue, green, brown, whatever! The color of your eyes doesn’t matter, but what does matter is that you rotate your eyes in clockwise and counter clockwise directions to help alleviate the puffy appearance.
    Trick #2: Elevate and Compress
While exercising your peepers, elevate your head on a few pillows to keep any fluids from pooling under your eyes. In this position you can also use our All Eyes, which is great at de-puffing and moisturizing the area surrounding your eyes.

Tip #3: Get Your Retinol Fix
Retinol is an ingredient found in many eye creams and for good reason.  A Retinol-based product is recommended to promote healthy cells around your eyes that revitalize your skin.

Trick #3: Less Puff, More Firm
Our Retinol Advanced Eye Complex absorbs quickly and includes Hyaluronic Acid for anti-aging. It is best to apply a cream like this just before bed. The skin around your eyes will appear smoother and firmer with consistent use.

If you don’t want the hassle of puffy eyes then try some preventive tips. Reducing those puffs can be done in treatments that are effortless. And remember, no one wants to be called the bag lady.

    What Makeup Should You Use?

Always wanted to know which foundations to use and how they should be applied? Don't know which type of foundation you should be using for your skin type?

We all wear makeup at one point or another so we need to know! Here are some of Natural Skin Shop's Tips and favorite foundation products.

    Normal/Dry Skin
Our favorite liquid foundation is the Serious Skin Care Profirm Foundation which is very light and will give you a great glow. A liquid foundation is best for a dry skin or normal skintype.

    Applying Liquid Foundation

Liquid foundation is best applied with a sponge or foundation brush for an even, flawless look. A translucent powder can be used to set the foundation or a foundation powder for added coverage. Sponges should are for single use only and your brush should be washed after every application.

    Applying Oil-based Foundations

Oil based foundations can be applied to slightly damp skin for more glide and a non-goopy application. Water based foundations serve their purpose (for oily skin types), but tend to be chauky and dont wear long.

    Sensitive Skin
Wet/dry powder foundations serve as both a foundation and touch up powder.  Palladios natural rice dual wet/dry uses rice powder instead of talc for those with more sensitive skin or talc allergies. It's avaliable at Sally's for only $10.

If you are looking to spend more money Lancomes Dual Finish is a great alternative. (Note: This foundation/powder has a heavy fragrance).

    Applying Powder Foundations
Powder foundations are best applied with a sponge, either wet or dry, in a patting motion. Sweeping it on may cause streaking when the powder dries (wet application). A foundation brush can also be used but practice makes perfect with this one. If you find that using a powder foundation wet makes your skin feel dry once it sets, you can try using a very light, water based moisturizer to mix with the powder.

    Problematic Skin- Heavier Coverage
Mineral foundation is a great choice for problematic skin, skin needing heavier coverage without having heavy layers, or those seeking a long wearing makeup that doesnt transfer. Mineral foundation can be irritating to some people so try to sample first if possible (let the counter people apply for you so you can learn the tecnique and wear it all day to check for irritation). Mineral foundations also offer the added benefit of sun protection.

Laura Mercier is our favorite for problematic skintype. This should be used with a primer and finishing powder for that undetectable flawless look.

    Applying Mineral Powder
The brushes you use for this foundation are very very important. Make sure they are designed for mineral powder application. Pour a small amount into the cap and apply the foundation by rubbing the brush on your skin in a circular motion.

No matter which you choose, all foundation looks best on properly primed and healthy skin....the better shape your face is in, the better your make up looks. Use good skin care!

    Tips When Picking a Foundation
    • Look for foundations that come from a reputable company,
    • Have added skin care benefits such as anti-oxidants or spf,
    • Sample as much as you can so that you dont waste money on products you end up hating,
    • Find the tecnique for application that works best for you
    • Make sure you are wearing the right shade!!
    Tips for Pimply Skin
    • Use only medicated antiseptic foundation and face powder which help to heal as well as flatter the complexion.
    • More emphasis should be put on the use of lipstick and eye makeup in order to draw attention to your eyes and mouth so that your pimpled skin is less noticeable.

Mythbuster Monday: Do the beverages you drink really affect your skin?

Does soda really cause breakouts? Does alcohol affect your skin? Is water good for preventing breakouts? What else can I drink besides water to help my skin? These are all questions you have probably asked at one time or another, so let's put some truth to these rumors.

    SODA:
So you go to the fridge and you see that nice cold soda you might want to think before you grab it.
Is soda really bad for your skin or do people just say that?

    Clogs Pores
Due to the high quantity of sugar found in soda, it can pollute your system with toxins. As a result your body will try and cleanse by ridding the toxins through your pores, which can cause breakouts.

    Dehydrates
While that caffeine may be that extra boost of energy you need it is a diuretic which causes the body to excrete water. This can cause dehydration not only for your body but your skin too!

    ALCOHOL:
It's been a long day and you want to unwind after work, on the beach with a beer, a glass of wine, or you're having a night out knocking back a few margaritas no harm right! You work hard, you deserve it! But while it may feel great that night, your skin won't be thanking you tomorrow.

    Dilates Blood Vessels
Alcohol can be detrimental to your skin, especially when done excessively. Alcohol dilates blood vessels in the skin. Therefore every time you take a drink the vessels remain dilated causing your skin to appear red and blotchy.

    Dehydrates
Alcohol also dehydrates your body and your skin which leaves you feeling dry, and in some cases your face looking flushed.

Alright so you shouldn't drink soda or alcohol, so what should you drink?

    WATER:
While water may not be full of flavor, it has tons of benefits especially for your skin.

    Hydration
Drinking 8 glasses of water a day is recommended to keep your skin properly hydrated. This will maintain your skin looking healthy, fresh and young.

    Flushes Out Toxins
When your body is built up with toxins, it tries to find a way to excrete them, which can be through the pores. Drinking water can help reduce this by flushing out those harmful toxins.

    GREEN TEA:
If you can't drink water all the time and want to add some flavor to your drink try green tea.

    Reduces Risk of Skin Cancer
Due to its high content of anti-oxidants, green tea has many benefits for your skin. These benefits include protecting your skin from harmful ultraviolet lights, which causes up to 90% of skin aging. Since it is protecting your skin from the UV rays, it is reducing your risk of skin cancer as well.

    Rejuvenates Skin Cells
At the end of the skin cell's life cycle, green tea has been proven to help regenerate new skin cells. Green Tea helps fight signs of aging with the help of Vitamins E & C (antioxidants).

So put down the soda and limit your alcohol intake. Not only will your skin thank you, your waist line will to.
